If you are a 3D or 4E with an interest in a JD alternative federal career, consider applying for the PMF program, a highly competitive, entry-level hiring program for the federal civil service. (With very rare exception, the PMF program will not lead to an attorney position.) A complete description of the program is available at the PMF website.

Please note the following: The PMF application timeline and deadlines have changed from years past.  This year the application period is open from September 15-25, 2011. In addition to the completed application, PMF applicants need to be nominated by the school. If you are seeking a nomination, please set-up an appointment with the school’s nominating official, Astrid Schmidt King, Assistant Dean of Law Career Development, at aschmidt@ubalt.edu by Wednesday, September 14th.

September 21st – Roundtable Discussion: Bankruptcy
Litigation after Stern v. Marshall - On June 23, 2011, the United States Supreme Court issued its decision in the case of Stern v. Marshall, holding that Bankruptcy Courts do not have Constitutional authority to enter final judgments on state-law counterclaims raised by debtors in bankruptcy. Since the Court dropped this bombshell, practitioners have been trying to figure out what this will mean in the context of consumer bankruptcy practice. Join a panel of Consumer Bankruptcy attorneys as they discuss the likely effects the Stern case will have on consumer bankruptcy litigation, and identify strategies consumer bankruptcy attorneys can use in the wake of this landmark decision. (Cost: Free, Optional Box Lunch: $10).

Bring your own lunch, as well as all of your questions!

The national American Inns of Court program, founded by then-Chief Justice Warren Burger of the U.S. Supreme Court, offers monthly dinner programs for lawyers and judges on a local basis, encouraging professionalism both by social interaction and by educational (and, we hope, entertaining) programs presented by groups of members. Designed particularly to benefit younger lawyers  and law students in their entry to the legal community, our program also may assist law students to meet potential future employers and/or get employment leads. Assistant Dean Astrid Schmidt King sits on the Board of the Anne Arundel County Inn (The James Cawood Inn of Court).

The next meeting of the Cawood Inn is Thursday, September 8th from 5:45-8:45pm at the Sheraton Annapolis (173 Jennifer Road, Annapolis, MD 21401). Come meet dozens of UB alum and practitioners. The cost is $10. If interested, please contact Astrid Schmidt King at aschmidt@ubalt.edu by August 26th.
